Before that, I learned German in high school, at university and privately too. All in all, that adds up to about 13 years of actively getting to know this beautiful language. Some would say that’s a lot, some would say it’s not much, and some would say it’s enough.

I don’t know. There are days when I think I’ve finally mastered this marvel of a language, both spoken and written. And then come those days (no, not THOSE days, other ones) when I wonder whether I can even say a word, let alone write one…

And no, I’m not going to moan again about struggling with my master’s thesis, because, thank God, so far I’m not. No, this is all about Her Majesty, the German language.

Sofia is now two years and five months old. She’s been at daycare for a year and two months already. At home with us she speaks Serbian, and at daycare she communicates in German, of course. So what’s the problem? Nothing, actually. From the very beginning, we wanted her to grow up with two languages and learn both of them properly. Because let’s be realistic, Marko and I will never speak German without a single mistake, and why should a child learn it wrong from us when she has the chance to learn it properly from people whose native language it is?

Since she’s only two, as I mentioned, keeping the two languages apart, as far as we can tell, comes to her automatically, although of course she sometimes slips a German word or two in when she’s talking to us, but never whole sentences. And I believe it’s the same with Serbian at daycare; after all, she’s still very little.

Something Marko and I noticed a long time ago is that when the two of us start speaking German with someone in front of her, she automatically switches over and starts speaking that language herself.

So I have all this information in my head, no problem there. And then yesterday, like every morning before, I took her to daycare. While we waited just a couple of minutes for her favourite teacher to come over and “take her over”, we read books.

We do that every morning, except that I make up the story from the pictures, in Serbian of course, because I don’t know what the books actually say, since they’re in German, naturally (this doesn’t mean I don’t understand them, just that the daycare has loads of books I’m simply seeing for the first time). And so my little darling brought me a third book, where every page showed a new animal chasing the mouse from the beginning of the story. And she started telling the story herself, naming every single animal, and all in German, of course.

I know my child, I know how much she loves books, and I know she knows “Zmajeva riznica” (a classic collection of Serbian children’s poems) and “The Lion King” by heart, because not a day goes by without us reading those two at least once, on top of all the other books. But that she knew German books that fluently, I had no idea. And how could I have?

All in all, a little stunned and confused, but much more thrilled, I ran to Marko and told him the whole story.

Having an idea of something isn’t the same. Only when you experience it does it take on a tangible shape.

I’m so proud of her for fitting in so beautifully with her surroundings, and for soaking up, but also using, new knowledge and new words.

And then I realised that I can already start learning from her. I know German, but what I know are the academic terms I come across, plus the ones I need to function in everyday life. What I don’t know are the ordinary words and terms I don’t have to use every day. For example, it never once crossed my mind to look up how to say bat in German, because I simply never needed it. And there are many, many more “ordinary” words like that, which you just never come across, or never think of looking up in a dictionary.

And that’s exactly where my two-year-old daughter’s knowledge is already bigger than mine. I’m proud and overjoyed, because I have a private tutor at home whose second native language is German, because she’s growing up with it too.

Knowing languages is the greatest wealth a person can have, and no one can ever take it away.

It really is incredible how much we can learn from our children from the day they come into this world.

Now I know how to say bat in German: die Fledermaus.

And what have you learned from your children today?

S-Mama

Yes, you read that right: my two-and-a-half-year-old little princess already […]

[1056
4554,4555,4557,4556
post-8023","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-mother","tag-bilingual-children","tag-bilingual-toddler","tag-learning-from-our-children","tag-learning-german

My Bilingual Toddler Speaks German Better Than I Do | S-Mama

<meta name="description" content="My bilingual toddler already speaks German better than I do.
