Welcome to the new section on the S-Mama Blog.
The idea for this section was born at the same time as the idea for the blog itself. But due to a very real lack of time to devote sufficiently to all the existing sections, this one somehow waited in the dark for its moment.
By way of introduction – I’m Mima, and I’m a serious series addict.
Let me give you a brief history (if that’s even the right medical term).
As someone who has always been seriously hooked on series and films, it was only natural that my professional life would also revolve largely around this visual media content. Books are my greatest love (family doesn’t fall into this category, because they are above everything else), but right behind them come series, followed by films.
Binge-Watching as a Way of Life
I’m someone who genuinely enjoys binge-watching – watching episodes of a series one after another until you’ve had enough. (With the small caveat that watching something rarely actually puts me off – it’s more that life itself and other obligations force me to stop.)
And yes, alongside family, studying, and reading, I manage to watch series too. That’s just me. 🙂
They say there’s no accounting for taste, and I partly agree. I believe taste isn’t worth arguing about, but different opinions are a great starting point for discussion and, through that, for learning from each other. Because the world would be far too boring if we all enjoyed watching the same things, wouldn’t it?
Quality Over Genre
I also don’t take genres too seriously as categories – in books or in music, and in films too. Why put a label on something and limit it, especially if it’s multilayered in every possible way? There are of course things that would never be my choice (I don’t like musicals, parodies, or horror, if I have to commit to something) – but that doesn’t mean I’ve never watched or won’t in the future watch films or series that fall into those categories by certain criteria.
While my husband can be described as a book snob, I’m an open snob when it comes to visual content. It probably comes with the years, the knowledge, and the experience.
I don’t like melodrama, bad acting, and most of all bad direction. I don’t like being able to predict the plot, the resolution, and the ending of a film within the first few minutes or a series within the first few episodes. I never watch those to the end.
I love multilayered stories, I love when something is filmed with real craft, when it makes me stop and think and get absorbed in the story, paying attention to details – because everything in the frame carries meaning. Maybe that’s also one of the reasons why films or series I consider “good” can be watched many times, over and over – because every time I discover something new.
An Expert in Visual Content
I also find the categories “good” and “bad” too limiting, and such evaluations are in my opinion superficial. They can only be justified if the “rating” is followed by an explanation of why. And the subjective experience of visual content is not the same for everyone.
I may not be an expert in the kitchen, in crafts, in history, or in cosmetics – but in series and films, I most definitely am, and without any false modesty.
Since I’ve been working in media research and analysis for many years, this section will include not only “film reviews” but also topics that are generally important and related to media and children.
For all these reasons, and in the hope of also receiving good recommendations from you for content I haven’t yet seen, I’m especially excited to be opening this new section on the S-Mama Blog. And I hope that you’ll soon have the chance to read reviews and recommendations from a devoted lover of these media formats.
Grab your popcorn and get comfortable.
